Cross-Cultural Counseling
Moving to a different country than your home country and being part of a multicultural/multiethnic family is a very personal journey. Migration can be very stressful and involves profound losses. However, as we are able to integrate different cultures and come to a peaceful place as whom you become, it can also be such a unique experience and an opportunity of growth as a human being, and even contribute to developing additional life and professional skills, very appreciated in particular in a globalized world.
Cross-cultural counseling can provide a safe space to integrate our past and present stories and allow us to integrate our experiences living in different places, as we search for our new identity. As an immigrant, I can be empathetic and understand your experience, and share my personal and professional knowledge about this journey and the steps towards developing a feeling of being at home again.
I can help you with the following areas in cross-cultural counseling:
- Life coaching to adapt to the new culture in the areas of relationships and professional life.
- Relationships between bicultural couples and/or multicultural/multiethnic families.
- Raising a child in a multicultural environment/family.
- Experience as a Third Culture Kid.
- Identity changes (including not belonging to the culture where you live and also feeling as a stranger in your own home country)
- Major life transitions away from your home country (engagement & marriage, becoming a new mom, death of a loved one, or graduating from school and beginning a new career).
- Issues related to trauma and abuse within the context of vulnerability as an immigrant (such as lacking documents, applying for citizenship etc).
- Issues affecting first generation adults and children, and their parents.
I offer counseling in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
