About Yane Barreto
I have practiced as a psychotherapist for over 10 years in Brazil and in the U.S. working with a culturally diverse population. I received my master's degree in Psychology from Seattle University in June, 2010 and developed a thesis research about The Experience of Becoming a Therapist in a Culture Different From One’s Own. I also earned a bachelor degree in Psychology from Federal University of Bahia, Brazil and completed a year post-bachelor professional internship in Clinical Psychology in 2002. I am Brazilian, married to an American and migrated to the U.S. in 2007. I worked at a community mental health agency as a Child and Family Therapist for three years, providing assessment and counseling services, and have worked for 5 years as a licensed psychologist in South America, in private practice and as part of a multi-professional team in the shantytowns of Brazil. In addition to working as a counselor with children, teenagers and adults in my private practice, I also provide psychosocial assessments for immigration cases.
I have rich personal and professional experiences across cultures, and I am able to understand the immigrant’s experience, the challenges of migrating to another country and integrating different cultures, and the experience of living “in-between”, which refer to a feeling of not belonging to one’s home country neither to the country chosen to live. I have a vast experience working with immigrants and children of immigrants, and I am able to provide counseling in Spanish, English and Portuguese. I value the importance of having a counselor who can empathizes with one’s experience and who is also able to communicate in one’s primary language.
I am a qualified professional in helping children 0 to 5 and their caregivers. I have studied extensively how trauma can affect young children and how a relationship-based approach can prevent the development of future chronic mental disorders and assist parents effectively.
I am certified in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), both evidence-based approaches.
